Anthropomorphism is a basic human pattern that causes us to attribute human characteristics to inanimate objects. Designers of weapon systems consciously exploit this tendency. A “face,” for example, makes an object more familiar and understandable, facilitates an emotional connection, and makes the technology seem less abstract or threatening.

Acceptance plays a particularly important role in military technology, as an anthropomorphized object can reduce fear. At the same time, however, it can also generate respect, authority, or intimidation. In propaganda or design, anthropomorphism is therefore a deliberate means of steering emotions.
