"In this image, we see something that we presumably perceive as fragments of objects, without being able to recognize the actual context of meaning of these fragments. Why is the context of meaning invisible here? The answer provided by perception psychology essentially states that the perception system cannot apply its categories of meaning as long as the cause of the fragmentation itself is not recognizable. As soon as the cause of the fragmentation of the objects becomes visible, while the object fragments remain exactly the same, we can easily fill in what is hidden and recognize the context. This reveals a general law of the psyche that is also of interest to our topic.

A meaningful context of facts can be made invisible, as it were, by a fragmented presentation. We then perceive nothing more than a collection of isolated fragments of information, as is usually the case when reading a daily newspaper. However, as soon as the cause of the fragmentation becomes apparent, we have no difficulty in recognizing the meaningful context."
