In June 2021, the first branch of Lina Braake Bank (LBB) opened up.
With the slogan “We're making our own money now!” displayed on the building at Karl-Marx-Allee 5-11, we gave the bank a far-reaching, transregional presence.
Based on Bernhard Sinkel's 1975 feature film, the film's thesis that Lina Braake's interests cannot be the interests of the bank is countered by the founding of LBB. This bank represented the interests of Lina Braake, or rather the rent-paying population of Berlin, by actively intervening in the discussion about the money creation monopoly of private banks and by issuing Braakteaten (Bkt) for the benefit of all tenants in Berlin.
The LBB container showed the bank's image film day and night. Here, anthropologist David Graeber commented on the earlier activities of our namesake Lina Braake.
The social quality of money, which Graeber advocated throughout his life, was also a central concern for Braake Bank.
The bank branch itself also houses the bank's own printing workshop.
Here, we printed the Braakteaten (housing allowance) during our public events. Tenants were able to print money themselves and later manage these claims in trust.
The money creation campaigns were accompanied by lectures by money experts who argued in the context of a democratic monetary system.
